As to different environmental organistions the Pantanal will diseppear within the next 50 years. Besides the problem of overfertilization due to the increasing of the stocks of cattles on the fazendas in the Pantanal the Cerrado-deforestation in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul (in favour of the cultivation of soya and sugarcane) is the main reason of the wetland-distruction.

Our pous ada UeSo-Cerrado is situated in the dry region of the Pantanal in the state of Mato Grosso. The second Pousada - UeSo-Pantanal – is situated more in the soth in the middle of the worldknown wetland area, which is flooded between october and may.
Unfortunately, foreign visitors will be bluffed through a big ecological promotion. Every pousada in the wetland uses the word “ecological” and it is also published in nearby all brochures of the organisators of tours into the Pantanal. But in this area “eco” only means the selling of nature. Most of the pousadas in the Pantanal which designate themselves as “eco” use fire-clearing to get more space for its cattles, which effects the sensitive soil especially in the dry season. After a few years grassland and woodland won’t grow on the areas devastated by fire-clearings. Most of the pousada owners don’t care much about waste disposel: mostely the burn their waste – even plastic – on their own pousada to save costs and time for proper disposal.
We do no fire-clearing and we separate all trash. Everything we cannot dispose ourselves, we bring to town for depollutation. We are composting all our kitchen slops and use the humus for our vegetable and fruit gardens.
We fight for the environment in the Cerrado region, which is less known than the Pantanal wetland, but both have to be secured. Deforastation will contribute its part to global warming through the greenhouse effect. Less forest in the Cerrado region will lead to longer and warmer dryseasons which will also effect the wetland. The water in the Pantanal wetland is mostely from the rainfalls in the higher regions and slowly flow down to the wetland where ist will be blocked why the wetland is flooded every year.

Management and staff of the UeSo-Pousadas will deliberately not designate themselves as “eco”. On our farms, the UeSo-Cerrado, 1400 hectares, and the UeSo-Pantanal, 700 hectares, we have a special ecological concept, which we discussed with our staff and implant strictly. We spend a lot of time and energy to explain the importance of environmental conservation to our staff and to motivate them to implant it.
Due to our ecologiacal support, the number of wild animals on our two farms fortunately is increasing for the last ten years. Silk- and capucine monkeys, the coati-mundi, the agouti and even the giant anteater, the ancaconda and the jaguar (well, at least footprints) can be seen here again!

Of course, we also have some cows on our farms but we use them only for our own needs: to supply milk for breakfast and to produce our own yoghurt free of any antidegradents.
