In the heart
of South America lies the Chapada, a green plateau 2600 feet above sea
level, with rugged rocky cliffs, majestic waterfalls and strangely formed
boulders. About a 120 square miles of the Chapada form a national park
with a large variety of different species of animals and plants. An asphalted road winds up to the remarkable mountain village Chapada dos Guimarães. The little town with its 15000 residents ist located approximately 37 miles northeast of Cuiabá, the capital of the federal state of Mato Grosso. In the village of Chapada lies the geographical center of South America as recent measurements taken by satellite have revealed. But not so for the Cuiabanos, the residents of Cuiabá, who prefer to stick with the result of measurements taken in 1909. In those days scientists believed Cuiabá to be the center of the continent. In Chapada dos Guimarães stands the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Santana. Built in the year of 1779 it is the oldest church of Mato Grosso. Every july the Festival do Inverno - the winter festival - takes place in Chapada. The festival features traditional as well as modern music, theater performances and exhibitions. UeSo-Pousadas, |
